CAMRA has once again voted Elland Brewery’s flagship beer as the best Porter in the country.
The judges at the annual CAMRA Winter Ales Festival awarded 1872 Porter the gold medal in its category and overall silver, just being pipped to the title this time by Marble Brewery’s chocolate stout.
After winning gold overall in the CAMRA Champion Winter Beer of Britain competition in 2015, the brewery were delighted to once again win gold in the Porter class and further reinforce the reputation of 1872 Porter by claiming a silver overall in this year’s Champion Winter Ales Festival.
Brewery manager Mike Hiscock commented: “Being crowned the best Porter in the country again and coming so close to winning overall champion for the fourth time is unprecedented and means that 1872 can now take its place amongst the truly great real ales in the UK.
“We are a small but dedicated team at Elland brewery and the award is a testament to the commitment of all involved.“
Head brewer Michael Wynnczuk remarked: “Having had three championship awards in the last six years, a fourth was certainly beyond my expectations.
“We re-branded our entire range last year and the beer just continues to grow in popularity, so we now offer our 1872 Porter in both keg and bottle to support our cask offering and we are really looking forward to our continued growth, both in the UK and abroad.”
The Porter’s previous successes include a gold medal at the 2004 International Brewing Awards, three previous overall winner awards at the CAMRA National Winter Ales Champion Beer event and the SIBA North East Gold Medal Winner for Premium Strong Beers.
